One of the most recognized general issue knives of WWII, the USMC Fighting Knife is not only still in use today it has also become a symbol of the Marines who carry it. Also known as the Mark 2, after its Navy designation, the knife was fist issued in early 1943 and has been the standard fighting knife of the Marine Corps for more than 50 years. The M3 Trench Knife was standardized by the United Sates Army on January 14, 1943 to replace the 1918 Mark1 Trench Knife, carried over from WWI. The M3 was intended for issue to any soldier not equipped with a bayonet. Priority issue was given to the Airborne, Rangers, Mountain and Glider infantry Troops. Over 2.5 million M3 knives were produced by nine manufacturers during WWII, at an average cost to the government of $1.50. Introduced in 1964, The M7 Bayonet was standard issue for the M16 family of rifles during the Vietnam War. Its 6-3/4" blade, combined with its checkered non-slip grip and overall black finish, allowed the bayonet to double as an effective fighting knife. Designed for close-combat trench warfare, the 1918 Mark 1 was commissioned near the end of World War I, but never saw action until the beginning of WWII, when it was pressed into service for, among others, Airborne, Rangers and Glider Infantry troops and saw action until early 1943, when it was replaced by the M3. The distinctive "knuckle-duster" grip of the Mk. 1 was cast in brass with a black anti-reflective finish. Highly collectible, the Mark 1 was made by three manufacturers in the U.S. and one in France.
