US Model 1917 Bolo Knife Windlass |
The United States Army used the same basic bolo knife from the turn of the 20th century until the end of World War II. Manufactured between 1897 and 1918, it underwent several modifications throughout its history. Initially issued to medical personnel on the battlefield, it was later distributed to combat troops, who used it for clearing brush, opening up fields of fire, and for any task that required a sturdy chopping tool.
We have chosen to reproduce the 1917 model, which was mass-produced in 1917 and 1918. It features a heavy-duty, high-carbon steel blade that is properly heat-treated in a computer-controlled kiln.
The full tang construction is integrated with the pommel, and the dark, close-grained wooden grips are secured with two large bolts. The right side of the blade base is stamped “US MOD 1917 CT,” while the left side bears the marking “PLUMB STLOUIS 1918.”
The set includes a No. 1 style scabbard, with a 1918 date stamp on the leather tip. The scabbard is covered in heavy canvas and features a sturdy brass throat and brass belt hanger, designed for use with standard military web belts.
