Forged from extremely durable 1060 spring steel, this blade is mono-tempered and machine polished. Forged without Bo-Hi, this blade is the most durable cutter in the 1060 line. The Shinogi-Ji is hand-burnished to a mirror polish, giving the blade a crisp geometry. The sword is fitted in Musashi themed Tsuba and Fuchi-Kashira with a pair of Buddhist sword Menuki. The Saya is finished in 11-layer natural lacquer taken to a high-gloss finish. The 11" Tsuka is paneled with genuine ray-skin and wrapped in black cotton Ito.

In Japan the traditional method of serving tea is a celebrated art form in itself. This highly ritualized ceremony is an involved process, the most elaborate of which can last hours and is reserved for the most distinguished of guests. Our Tea Culture Daisho (SH2331, SH2332) captures the essence of this important tradition. The Katana and Wakizashi are built upon a traditional Shinogi Zukuri style blade with Bo-Hi. The high-carbon blade is hand forged and differentially hardened using the traditional clay method. The Koshirae (furniture) feature the typical elements present in a Japanese tea ceremony. The handle is wrapped with suede leather in a Katati Make (battle wrap) style.

The Story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated and influential tales of the Samurai from the Edo period. Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo ordered by the Shogun to entertain guests of the Imperial Family. The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was given the task of teaching Asano, among others, proper matters of etiquette in this task. Lord Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other and the teacher insulted his student at every opportunity. No longer able to contain himself, Asano drew his sword upon Kira, wounding him in the attack. This act led to Asano's ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. On December 14, 1702, nearly one year after Asano's death, 47 of Asano's men (now Ronin), descended upon the mansion of Kira to exact their revenge.

Our Paper Crane Daisho (SH2294-Katana / SH2328-Wakizashi) is without doubt the greatest achievement in sword making artistry yet available from Hanwei. The blade is crafted from Hanwei's own Tamahagane steel (see below) while the fittings reflect the atmosphere of the Japanese theater. The Daisho's name stems from the origami (the art of paper folding) cranes that decorate the striking Tsuba and Fuchi/Kashira, all of which feature highly-prized "Nanako" or stippled backgrounds. The Menuki feature thespian masks, a symbol shared by the Japanese theater and its western counterpart. The Saya of the katana houses a Kozuka (small knife) while that of the Wakizashi carries a Kogai (hair pick) The Kozuka and Kogai are decorated with musical instruments of the theater. The Paper Crane theme is carried to the outstanding hand woven silk Sageo, the result of many hours of skilled work on a hand loom.

The blades of each of the Fuku-Riu swords are hand-forged from K120C powder steel. The blade style for the katana is of the style of Unokubi-Zukuri, ½ blood grove with a re-enforced Kissaki. The wakizashi does not have a bo-hi. The saya is a blend of green and black polished lacquer, unique to this line and a first for the forge. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka of the katana and wakizashi. The tsuba of the katana daisho are crafted in traditional blackened iron with a detailed depiction of the Fuku-Riu dragon holding a smoky agate “pearl”. The fuchi and kashira are also of blackened iron. The kashira depicts a dragon claw also holding an agate “pearl”, the pearl being set so that it is free to rotate within the claw, yet another first for the forge.

This series has been designed to commemorate some of the most well know dragons found in Japanese myth and legend. Paul Chen’s Forge and designers have brought to life in this sword series not only a unique idea, but unique swords never before attempted in this genre.
Fuku – Riu - Japanese Dragon of Good Luck
Little is known of the Fuku-Riu. It is said, however, that if seen good fortune and luck will soon follow the beholder. The dragon is often depicted ascending heaven-ward, a sign of success in some circles. We have depicted this ascension in the Tsuba of the Fuku-Riu. The pearl being held by the dragon is also a sign of good luck and wealth. The design of this tsuba is a first for master sword maker Paul Chen and unique to this collection. The saya design is also unique to the series as it is a black-green blend…green being a color associated in Japanese history with luck. The Fuku-Riu dragon is rare in the literature of Japanese history but still a very important and integral part of the Tatsu Collection and a fitting first for this series.

The Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore similar to western demons or trolls. In modern culture they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation into the role of guardian or protector, similar in character to gargoyles. Their power and ferocity, however, have not diminished. There is a Japanese saying which translates to "Oni with an iron club", or to be of an invincible nature, a fitting association with the 29" L6/Bainite blade on which our Oni Katana is built. The blade features the geometry of our Performance Series for outstanding cutting ability.
