Through Japanese history, dragons have been an integral part of the life and lore of Japan. This series has been designed to commemorate some of the most well know dragons found in Japanese myth and legend. Paul Chen’s Forge and designers have brought to life in this sword series not only a unique idea, but unique swords never before attempted in this genre.
Fuku – Riu - Japanese Dragon of Good Luck
Little is known of the Fuku-Riu. It is said, however, that if seen good fortune and luck will soon follow the beholder. The dragon is often depicted ascending heaven-ward, a sign of success in some circles. We have depicted this ascension in the Tsuba of the Fuku-Riu. The pearl being held by the dragon is also a sign of good luck and wealth. The design of this tsuba is a first for master sword maker Paul Chen and unique to this collection. The saya design is also unique to the series as it is a black-green blend…green being a color associated in Japanese history with luck. The Fuku-Riu dragon is rare in the literature of Japanese history but still a very important and integral part of the Tatsu Collection and a fitting first for this series.

The Shinto Elite (SH6004KGE) features a hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel katana blade featuring the geometry of the Performance Series. The blade is differentially hardened using the traditional claying method. The Shinto is mounted in black and the tsuka-ito is made of premium black Japanese cotton. The saya is finished in a deep black lacquer with a black cotton sageo. A finely rendered dragon, detailed in gold, with true front-and-back detail, forms the black iron tsuba. The fittings are superbly antiqued adding to the aesthetics of the set. The Shinto is supplied with a protective cloth bag and traditional maintenance kit.

Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Mounted in black, the Musashi Elite is faithful to the original down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray skin. The blades are hand-forged in high-carbon steel, with new geometry to enhance cutting ability. It is edge-tempered using the traditional clay tempering method, resulting in a distinct hamon. Edge hardness is HRC60, back hardness HRC40. The grip is double-pegged to the tang for safety. The cutting style katanas (Elite, XL, XL Light) include a traditional maintenance kit.

The Tori Tanto is built on a forged and folded blade with the handle wrapped in the highest quality ray skin. The Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore similar to western demons or trolls. In modern culture they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation into the role of guardian or protector, similar in character to gargoyles. Their power and ferocity, however, have not diminished. There is a Japanese saying which translates to "Oni with an iron club", or to be of an invincible nature, a fitting association with the 29" L6/Bainite blade on which our Oni Katana is built. The blade features the geometry of our Performance Series for outstanding cutting ability. The 14" tsuka is wrapped in black ray skin and silk ito while the Koshirae feature Oni in various classical styles. A unique combination of folklore and functionality.

The Dynasty Forge Bushi Cherry Blossom Katana features a blackened iron tsuba in a cherry blossom theme. The grip is wrapped in dark green silk cord over white ray skin. Includes a black lacquered wood saya and cotton sword bag.

Forged from pure 1095 high-carbon steel, this 29" blade is as resilient as it is beautiful. Hand-forged and clay-tempered, the Hamon is brought out through a meticulous traditional hand-polish on imported Japanese stones. This fine polish exposes the grain of the steel, very similar to Nashiji Hada (pear Hada). A hand-carved and burnished Bo-Hi keeps this large blade balanced and lively. The blade is fitted in our popular mokko cherry theme. The Tsuka is wrapped in silk Ito. The Saya is finished in a durable black matte lacquer.
