| Hanwei Practical Plus Katana (SH2073) |

The "Practical Plus" Katana provides a very economical cutting sword as dependable as the Practical Katana (SH1070), but using more traditional fittings and construction methods. The blade is forged and differentially tempered (HRC60 edge, HRC40 back) and the hamon is prominent. The Practical Plus features genuine Same (Rayskin) on the Tsuka, with a wrap (Tsuka-Ito) specially developed for its gripping qualities. The long tang is double-pegged for security. The fittings of the Practical Plus are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome Tsuba is of an iron "sunburst" design with a brass habaki.

The Story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated and influential tales of the Samurai from the Edo period. Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo ordered by the Shogun to entertain guests of the Imperial Family. The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was given the task of teaching Asano, among others, proper matters of etiquette in this task. Lord Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other and the teacher insulted his student at every opportunity. No longer able to contain himself, Asano drew his sword upon Kira, wounding him in the attack. This act led to Asano's ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. On December 14, 1702, nearly one year after Asano's death, 47 of Asano's men (now Ronin), descended upon the mansion of Kira to exact their revenge.

The Yari was an essential battlefield weapon of the Samurai and took great skill to use and maneuver due to its length and size. The yari by CAS/Hanwei is reminiscent of the ones of feudal Japan. The blade is a straight triangulated double-edged forged high-carbon steel with a deep fuller on the flat side of the blade. The tang of the yari is long to absorb the shock of a blow and the one-piece staff construction reinforces the durability of the spear. Our yari is modeled after the su-yari or straight-spear design. The shaft (ebu) of the yari is done in a deep black lacquer and has a flattened side at the bottom section for blade orientation. The fittings (koshirae) are of traditional design and make the yari aesthetically pleasing. The blade is constructed from hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel. The yari blade is carefully protected by a sheath (saya) and comes with maintenance kit for proper care. In both design and structure, the yari a great addition for those who train in sojutsu.

Our Japanese kabuto and mempo are superbly constructed, beautifully detailed and a great value. Models SH2082/SH2083/SH2088 replicate the helms of the great Daimyo Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga and Date Masamune respectively. Model SH2081, based on a museum piece of unknown provenance, doubles as an exquisite stand for a katana and wakizashi set. All four pieces are equipped with leather inserts allowing them to be worn. Custom designed wooden display stands are included.

The Traditional Maintenance Kit from Hanwei is supplied with several of the higher end swords and is also available separately. The kit contains blade oil (traditional choji oil), rice papers, an oiling cloth, a powder ball for blade polishing, a brass awl and hammer and saya shimming veneer. The kit is contained in a fitted wooden box and full maintenance and handling instructions are included.
